I love to make handmade gifts for the holidays but after years of making gifts, there are only so many scrapbooks I can give someone, right? As I get older, I find myself wanting to give practical and useful gifts, not just some pretty chotsky. But I do want the gift to be pretty! And a great way to make things pretty is to put them in a mason jar. Since my sister has been into essential oils and making her own bath srubs, I thought a DIY spa kit in a mason jar would be a fun, practical gift to compliment something she already loves doing – getting pampered!

The kit looks cute in the mason jar but its practical too – the jar keeps everything in one place and the vented lid allows things to stay dry. Whenever my sister wants to file her nails or add a coat of polish, all she has to do is pull out this handy jar and get to pampering. It's even cute enough to keep out on the bathroom counter. Here's how…
Gather the supplies and elements to put in your spa kit. It's a good idea to measure the tallest item and make sure your jar is that height plus about an inch. I did all of my shopping at Target – they sell both the mason jars and the spa supplies so you can actually check in-store to see if your items all fit in the jar before buying. The supplies to fill this jar cost just under $20. You can tie on a gift card to your favorite bath & beauty supply shop, like Sephora or Bath & Body Works, or even add a Starbuck's card for a little extra pampering! Here's what I got:
- Burt's Bees Tips and Toes Spa Gift Set
- Trim Manicure Set
- Ball® Heritage Collection Mason Jars
- Sally Hansen Xtreme Nail Polish (these are nice slim bottles that fit well in the jar)
- Vented Mason Jar Drinking Lid (in the $1 Spot at Target)
- Felt Flower
- Twine
- Shank Button
- Felt Leaf
- Hot Glue Gun
- Fine Point Tweezers
- Crop-A-Dile or Hole Punch or Scissors
To make this more luxurious spa set, add a second jar filled with a homemade sugar scrub! You can also substitute a tag for the flower.
Do you make gifts for your family and friend during the holidays? What kind of gift would you put in a mason jar? Let me know in the comments…
This is a great idea! I have never assembled a complete spa kit. I may have just bought one but this is fun and I like the thought of a hand made embellishment or nice gift tag on the outside.
